Headteacher’s Welcome

It is with immense pride and excitement that I welcome you to Shrewsbury Academy—a school that has become a beacon of excellence in Shropshire. As Headteacher, I am privileged to lead a school at the heart of its community, that is defined by its relentless ambition, for our students, our staff, our community, and our future.

We know that every young person has extraordinary potential. Our mission is to unlock this through high expectations, exceptional teaching, and a culture that nurtures aspiration and achievement. We are not just preparing students for exam success, but for them to make a difference to the world they live in. We make no apology for having the highest expectations and driving high standards.

We continue on a transformational journey, having recently opened a £20 million STEM facility, bringing world-class resources to our students, state-of-the-art science laboratories, cutting-edge design technology and food technology rooms, and inspiring new spaces for technology, I-media and mathematics. Our students learn in an environment that rivals any others – a statement of our ambition and our belief in what our students can achieve.

Inclusion is at the heart of our ethos. Our investment in our SEND provision, ensures every student receives the support they need to thrive, whether that is within our mainstream offer, or through our specialist Bridge and Lighthouse centres. At the heart of our curriculum is a strong focus on literacy and speaking skills, the secret of learning and engagement in our school. Our dedicated pastoral team work incredibly closely with our students, overcoming obstacles with unique guidance and support.

One of our most exciting developments is ‘The Shore’, our purpose-built Year 7 transition school. This unique space gives our youngest students a dedicated environment where they can grow in confidence, build friendships, and make a strong start to their secondary school journey. With their own teaching rooms, restaurant, and social areas, where our Year 7 students are supported every step of the way to know they are safe and feel happy.

Beyond the classroom, we have a culture of belonging, wellbeing, and opportunity. An extensive programme of sport, fitness, and enrichment clubs run before and after school every day, with hundreds of students taking part each week. Whether it’s football, netball or strength training, performing arts or science club, there is something for everyone—and every student is encouraged to get involved. Our pledge is that all students will be routinely involved in experiences such as the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, representing the school in sports events, visiting the theatre and participating in overseas trips.

We are proud of how far we’ve come. The quality of our offer to students has never been stronger, and our reputation is rightly growing—both locally and beyond. We are attracting talented, passionate teachers who share our vision, and we are fast becoming the school of choice for families and for high quality teachers and educational professionals. Our staff engage in high quality professional development within in a culture of high expectations and a researched based focus on developing the skills of our team.

The school is proud to be part of the Marches Academy Trust, comprising a blend of both primary and secondary schools and is truly a family of collaboration and opportunity. We challenge each other to be the best we can be, through a vision of ‘achievement through caring’.  With this comes the opportunity for our students to be part of something bigger. We are a growing community with a collaborative sixth form facility Open 6, offering brand new opportunities from September 2025, for learning post sixteen that are both flexible and truly exceptional, to meet the learning needs of modern times in a blended offer of online and face to face learning.

Shrewsbury Academy is a school with momentum, purpose, and with heart. I invite you to come and visit during the working day, meet our students and staff, and see for yourself what makes our community so special.

Together, we are building something exceptional.
