Year 9 have been investigating how lipids, or fats, are digested in Science ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿงฌ

Students modelled the role of bile, which emulsifies fats. Using detergent as a model, they observed how large fat globules were broken down into thousands of much smaller ones, massively increasing the surface area and helping digestion to take place.

They also discussed how detergents and natural emulsifiers, such as lecithin found in egg yolk, are used in food technology to help oil and water based substances mix, creating smooth pastes and sauces that would not normally combine. Brilliant practical learning and great scientific thinking on show ๐Ÿ‘

P is for protein in Year 9 Science ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿงฌ

Year 9 have been learning how to test foods for lipids (fats), carbohydrates and protein. In this lesson, they explored the protein test and observed how biuret solution turns purple when added to food rich in protein.

To help them remember, it is P for protein and P for purple, a simple and effective way to link the science to their observations. Great practical work and scientific thinking from the class ๐Ÿ‘

Year 7 have made a fantastic start on their Celebrity Portraits in Art ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿชก

At the start of the year, students explored a wide range of embroidery stitches, practising each one in lessons and building confidence in their sewing skills. Once ready, they put needle to fabric and began their portraits.

Using carbon paper, they carefully transferred their chosen celebrities onto fabric and then decided which stitch would work best for each feature. The work so far shows great creativity, thoughtful decisionโ€‘making and impressive skill.

We had a full class of Year 10 students cooking in Food and it has been great to see their skills develop ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿณ

They have just finished their exploration into sauce making, with a focus this term on gelatinisation.

Students started with white and cheese sauce, moved on to veloutรฉ for curries or casseroles, and finished with crรจme pรขtissiรจre. They then made their own custard, which was added to trifle dishes or sweet pastry cases, with some even practising the skill of piping.

The finished desserts looked delicious and the progress shown has been fantastic. Well done Year 10 ๐Ÿ‘

Year 7 at Shrewsbury Academy loved making rock cakes๐Ÿฐ

Rock cakes are a traditional British treat with a rough, craggy surface, crunchy on the outside and soft inside, often filled with dried fruit such as sultanas. They became especially popular during WWII as they required less sugar and eggs, making them a simple and practical bake for tea time.

During the lesson, students showed exceptional organisation and listening skills as they learned and used the rubbing in method. This technique coats the flour in fat, reducing gluten development and helping to create a light, crumbly texture, perfect for cakes, scones and pastry.

A fantastic session full of learning, teamwork and practical skills. Well done Year 7 ๐ŸŒŸ

It is so lovely to see so many students making the most of our Fitness Suite first thing in the morning. Arriving from 7.30am with such commitment and positivity, they have been training all year round. Their dedication is something to be really proud of ๐Ÿ’ชโœจ

Students were given bananas for a quick burst of energy and to help them understand how small choices can make a big difference to their training.

A huge well done to everyone who continues to show up, work hard and support each other. What a fantastic start to the day! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‘

Our Summer Term STEM Programme is packed with exciting hands on activities, from celebrating Easter periodic table style and making polymer water beads, to slime experiments, phony physics, medical madness and even balloon rockets.

Children will work in teams, solve puzzles and explore science, technology, engineering, arts and maths in fun and memorable ways.

We love seeing curiosity, creativity and problem solving skills come to life through experiences like this, and we cannot wait for another brilliant term of STEM learning.

Investigating anaerobic respiration, Red Nose Day style ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ”ด

Year 9 at Shrewsbury Academy have been exploring anaerobic respiration by yeast, investigating how the mass of glucose affects the volume of carbon dioxide produced. They did a fantastic job testing their ideas and proved their hypothesis that increasing the amount of glucose increases the products formed.

To link their learning with Comic Relief, they even added a red nose to the biggest balloon collecting the gas, a brilliant reminder of the important work supported by the charity.
