🔥 Did Alicia Keys get it wrong with her lyrics "This girl is on fire"? Clearly, she hasn’t met our Headteacher Mr. Taylor! It’s official—the new anthem should be "This Head is on fire!" 🔥
With teaching and learning at the top of the agenda, Shrewsbury Academy is continually improving, and last year’s GCSE results are proof of that. 📈
Our student numbers keep rising, and the new Haughmond Building is a haven of calm, focused learning. Plus, we’re excited about the brand new, all-singing, all-dancing STEM block opening soon—just around the corner (literally!). 🧪🔧
Under Mr. Taylor's leadership, Shrewsbury Academy is going from strength to strength, and we couldn’t be prouder. For more information about our school, please visit shrewsburyacademy.co.uk💙
🔒 Important Online Safety Information for Shrewsbury Academy Families! 🌐
We have been asked by West Mercia Police to share some valuable information regarding free online safety sessions available for our families. These sessions will cover essential topics such as dangerous apps, balancing screen time, sextortion, the impact of online influencers, and much more.
To sign up for these informative sessions, please visit the following link: Exploitation and vulnerability training | West Mercia Police or use the QR code on the attached flyer.
As always, these sessions are fully funded by the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner, meaning there is no cost to families. We encourage all families to take advantage of this excellent opportunity to enhance online safety for our children.
🎂🧠 Year 8 students at Shrewsbury Academy brought their A-game to support our Macmillan Coffee Morning with some competitive cake-making! 🍰
Amelia proudly claimed that Mr. Phillip’s tutor group made the best cakes, including their delicious brain cakes (with the “tenuous” claim that eating them makes you brainy 😉).
Not to be outdone, some of Miss Allsop’s and Mrs. Gibson’s students teamed up to create and decorate The Periodic Table Cakes—and even had a small debate over who would get to eat Au (gold) 🏅.
There was plenty of fun and learning about chemical symbols. Here's a brain teaser: what do the symbols for deuterium, lithium, carbon, iodine, oxygen, uranium, and sulfur spell? D_LiCIOUS! 🤩
🌍✨ Our amazing 8R students had a fantastic time discussing how the brilliant MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) department at Shrewsbury Academy has been celebrating the European Day of Languages! 🎉
It was wonderful to hear how much our students love learning Spanish at SA. We also discovered the impressive linguistic talents of both 8R students and tutors. Many of our staff and students are fluent in multiple languages, with English being their second or even third language! 🌟
What a great opportunity to learn more about each other and celebrate our diverse cultural backgrounds and language skills! 🌐💬
🌍 Year 11 Child Development: Tackling Period Poverty & Understanding the Menstrual Cycle 🌸
Our Year 11 Child Development students have been exploring the important issue of Period Poverty around the world. This was linked to their studies on the menstrual cycle as part of their Child Development course exam content.
As a practical activity, students created menstrual cycle bracelets, with different stages represented by coloured beads, deepening their understanding of the cycle's phases. They also shared their bracelets and knowledge during Science lessons, promoting awareness and learning among their peers.
We are proud of their efforts to combine learning with social awareness! 🌟

🎉 October Holiday Activities at Shrewsbury Academy! 🎉
Looking for fun and engaging activities this October half term? Join us on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th October from 10am to 1pm for some exciting holiday fun! We've got a fantastic line-up of activities planned for all ages.
Exciting opportunities across our Trust Sixth Forms! If you're thinking about your next steps after Year 11, come along to one of our Sixth Form Open Evenings to explore the fantastic courses and career pathways available.
🔸 Sir John Talbot's Sixth Form – Thursday 17th October, 4:30pm - 6:30pm 🔸 Idsall Sixth Form – Tuesday 5th November, 4:30pm - 7:30pm 🔸 Grove Sixth Form – Thursday 10th October, 4:30pm - 7:30pm
These events are a great chance to meet staff, learn more about the wide range of A-level and vocational options, and see what makes each Sixth Form special. Transport options available.
🔬✨ What a fantastic Open Evening put on by our Science Department at Shrewsbury Academy! Our talented Year 11 Biology students impressed everyone with their dissection skills, explaining the wonders of double circulation—how blood travels from the heart to the lungs and back. ❤️➡️🌬️
With some help from our Headteacher Mr. Taylor, students demonstrated diffusion in action! Mr. T added a pellet of dry ice into a bronchus, causing it to sublimate (solid to gas, skipping the liquid phase) and creating a spooky mist of particles. 🌫️
It was the perfect visual for showing how particles spread from areas of high concentration to low concentration. 🫁
But the fun didn’t stop there! Students used microscopes, tested pH levels, performed flame tests, built circuits, and even got hands-on with static electricity at the Van der Graaf Generator station ⚡—where pie dishes flew and sparks were in the air! ✨
And of course, our amazing Science teachers teamed up to demonstrate methane flames—because teamwork truly makes the flames bigger (and the dream work)! 🔥👏
Missed our Open Evening but want to look around? No problem, pop a call to our amazing team on 01743 276700 and they'll arrange for you to come in.
Our Year 11 students have been hard at work investigating rates of reaction, demonstrating advanced science skills. They’ve been ensuring their investigations are valid by conducting repeats, excluding anomalies, and calculating the mean. Safe. Efficient. Successful. Great job, everyone!
In Mrs. Gibson's Year 10 class, students are learning from one another, taking turns to lead their own learning. The engagement is fantastic, and they are truly developing important life skills. There’s so much talent in 10Y4!
Here are our proud Year 10 STEAM Club Leaders getting ready to assist students from Years 7, 8, and 9. Our young leaders did a great job helping everyone get gross and gruesome! Students examined specimens like spiders, thistles, nettle stings, spider legs, and even ear wax under the microscope. A big thank you to our Year 11 STEAM Club Leaders for reminding us that a community consists of two or more populations of different species in a habitat.
Check out the close-up images of a spider’s leg and a nettle sting (trichome) from our SA community!
And let’s not forget about one of our fabulous STEAM Club members showing off his cool science trick! He picked up an ice cube using just a thin piece of string and a little table salt. The science behind this? Salt lowers the freezing point of water, causing the ice to melt slightly, allowing the water to refreeze around the string. Why not try this trick at home?
Additionally, our students have been exploring magnetic metals like iron, cobalt, and nickel, along with alloys such as steel paperclips. They’ve learned how bringing a permanent magnet near a ferromagnetic object aligns the magnetic domains, making it temporarily magnetic. They even discovered how to create a semi-permanent magnet by aligning the domains with a magnet.
To top it all off, students practiced patience and resilience as they used magnets to "charm" a paperclip like a snake. What a fun and educational day filled with curiosity and discovery!
