🌟 Our inquisitive Year 7 scientists have been investigating diffusion – the movement of particles from an area of high to an area of low concentration. They timed how long it took ammonium hydroxide (NH₄OH) to diffuse in boiling tubes and turn indicator paper blue. When red litmus paper comes into contact with a basic or alkaline solution like ammonium hydroxide, students found out it turns blue! 🧪🔬
What an exciting and educational experience for our young scientists! Visit shrewsburyacademy.co.uk to learn more about our programs and opportunities.
We were honoured to welcome Julia Buckley MP to Shrewsbury Academy today, where she met with our children, young people, staff and parents. Julia also toured our new development alongside Sarah Finch, CEO of Marches Academy Trust, Ryan Jervis, Chair of the Local Governing Body, and Jim Taylor, Headteacher at Shrewsbury Academy.
This new facility, along with the redevelopment of the former infant school, provides the children and young people of North Shrewsbury with new classrooms, including state-of-the-art science and technology rooms, a new library, a refurbished gymnasium, and dedicated space for our Year 7 children to settle into secondary school.
We are excited about the opportunities these improvements bring and grateful for the support from our community leaders. Thank you, Julia Buckley MP, for your visit and encouragement!
Julia comments about her visit, “It’s been fantastic today to visit the new facility, all of the staff and governors are so excited to see how it’s coming on and we are looking forward to it opening to students after the Easter holiday. I am particularly impressed with the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) facilities which is a high interest area for our students here in Sundorne. I was also pleased to see a beautiful Learning Resource Centre that we are all going to work together to secure some books for. Well done to everyone involved and I look forward to visiting again once the students have moved in.”
As part of an ongoing conservation project, several of our students have been supporting some grounds work at the Fields Study Centre. The team worked collaboratively by dismantling and removing a damaged fence. In addition, they replaced it by planting a holly hedgerow to improve the aesthetics of the area. The team worked extremely well together with a positive result. Well done to everyone involved!

🔬 Year 9 Investigates Osmosis at Shrewsbury Academy! 🔬
Our Year 9 students have been using their science skills to investigate osmosis. They were health and safety conscious, followed the method to ensure their results were accurate and valid, and made sure their data was comparable. Well done, 9y1!
Visit shrewsburyacademy.co.uk to learn more about our school and our exciting science programs.
🔬 Year 8 Explores Beak Adaptations at Shrewsbury Academy! 🔬
Year 8 enjoyed a practical science activity to explore beak adaptations in bird populations. They followed in Darwin’s footsteps to look at how variation in beak shape is related to the available food sources within an environment. Students simulated bird feeding by using a model ‘beak’ to collect food and place it into a stomach. The different beak shapes/birds included “spoonbill”, “stabby beak”, and “tweezerbill” who tried a range of seeds & sweeties! Proof that studying evolution is yum! Well done, Year 8.

🔬 Exciting Experiments with STEAM Club at Shrewsbury Academy! 🔬
Our intrepid STEAM Clubbers carried out flame tests – a qualitative identification technique where samples are heated using a Bunsen burner and the metal ions present are identified by characteristic flame colours. They discovered that potassium is lilac, calcium is orange-red, and copper is green.
In celebration of St David’s Day at the beginning of March, students applied their learning to find out what daffodils (the national flower of Wales) are made of. They concluded that daffodils contain potassium. Well done, STEAM Club! 🌼
🏆 Inter-House Competition at Shrewsbury Academy! 🏆

🌟 Exciting Visit to the British Ironworks Centre! 🌟
Mrs. Howells and Miss Compton recently visited the The British Ironwork Centre to collect a generous donation for our upcoming New York raffle. You may recall we hosted the 'anti-violence bee' at Shrewsbury Academy some time ago, and you can see from the photographs that the British Ironworks Centre is also the home of the famous Knife Angel, along with many other amazing sculptures, including the very apt Captain America, all cleverly made from scrap items.
Thank you, British Ironworks Centre, for a fantastic, interesting day and, of course, the generous donation. The British Ironworks are one of many generous organisations that have donated some fantastic prizes to our New York raffle, which will be drawn in the coming weeks. Thank you to those who have bought tickets so far! For more information and to buy tickets, please contact the school reception [email protected].
